Trump puts federal diversity, equity and inclusion staff on leave

The Trump administration has directed that employees involved in federal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs be placed on paid leave by Wednesday, January 22, 2025. This follows a series of executive orders aimed at dismantling federal DEI initiatives, citing concerns over discrimination and misuse of taxpayer funds.

One of the executive orders, titled “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing,” accuses the Biden administration of fostering division through its DEI emphasis. According to the order, these programs have “divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination.”

What the Orders Require

Under the new directives, federal agencies must:

  • Notify employees involved in DEI programs that they will be placed on paid leave.
  • Remove all DEI-related materials from official platforms.
  • Submit compliance reports to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) by Thursday noon.

Employees affected will retain full pay and benefits, but will lose email access and will not be expected to perform work responsibilities. The OPM clarified that this action is “not being done for any disciplinary purpose.”

Future Compliance and Broader Impact

Agencies must submit workforce reduction plans for DEI programs by January 31. The Justice Department is tasked with providing recommendations within 120 days to halt DEI initiatives in private and federally funded educational institutions.

This policy shift mirrors actions by major U.S. companies such as Walmart and Facebook, which have recently scaled back DEI programs amid criticism from conservative circles. However, the orders do not restrict college and university educators from advocating for DEI initiatives.
