Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, has officially requested to step down from his position. President Samia Suluhu Hassan confirmed this during a special meeting in Dodoma, announcing that she has accepted his request after careful consideration.
“Dr. Mpango approached me personally and expressed his desire to step down, citing personal reasons unrelated to his work,” President Samia stated. He emphasized his age and the need to prioritize his health and well-being as the main factors behind his decision.
Despite his resignation request, Dr. Mpango will continue serving as Vice President until the general elections later this year.
Following this development, President Samia, who also serves as the CCM party chairperson and the party’s presidential candidate, has nominated Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi as her running mate for the October 2025 elections.
Dr. Nchimbi, currently the CCM Secretary General, assumed his position on January 15, 2024, after succeeding Daniel Chongolo, who resigned in late November 2023. The nomination underscores President Samia’s focus on continuity and leadership within the ruling party.
This shift in leadership comes at a critical time for Tanzania as the country prepares for the upcoming elections, signaling potential changes in governance and party dynamics.
