Global luxury brand Gucci to set up factory in Kenya

Kenya is poised to become a key player in the global luxury market as over 300 companies, including the renowned Italian fashion house Gucci, express interest in setting up operations at the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park in Mavoko, Machakos County.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki revealed that the industrial park is set to transform Kenya’s hides and skins sector into a high-value industry by producing premium leather goods such as shoes, bags, and accessories. The project, once operational, is expected to elevate the leather sector’s contribution to the national economy from Ksh. 10 billion to Ksh. 150 billion annually.

“Industries that use leather to make designer products are now seeking to set up at Kenanie. Over 300 global investors, including Gucci, have expressed interest. That is how you transform a country,” Kindiki stated during a consultative forum at his Karen residence.

The Kenanie Leather Industrial Park, spanning over 500 acres, aims to be a one-stop hub for leather processing, footwear, and related industries. The government has outlined its strategy to boost local production, create employment opportunities, and attract foreign investment.

Key Benefits of the Kenanie Leather Park Initiative:

  • Increased Demand for Hides & Skins: Local supply will need to be ramped up to meet the growing demand.
  • Higher Prices for Raw Materials: Farmers and traders in the leather industry will benefit from better prices.
  • Job Creation: The project will generate employment opportunities across various sectors, from raw material suppliers to factory workers and designers.
  • Global Trade Expansion: Kenya will strengthen its export capabilities in the luxury leather industry.

According to Kindiki, infrastructure upgrades are in the final stages, including road construction, power enhancements, and a water treatment plant. The park is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

Gucci, known for manufacturing in Italy, France, and Spain, is now looking to expand its footprint into Africa. With Kenya’s strategic location, skilled labor, and government support, the move could place the country on the map as a key destination for luxury goods production.

Applications for space at the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park are ongoing, and investors are being encouraged to take advantage of the business-friendly policies set by the government.
