Dar es Salaam to Host Africa Energy Summit: A Milestone for Tanzania’s Energy Progress

Tanzania’s Strategic Opportunity

The summit provides Tanzania with a platform to expand electricity access from 5.2 million households to 13.5 million by 2030. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy Dr. Doto Biteko highlighted the summit’s importance:

“The summit will bring international recognition to our country,” he said, urging citizens to maintain peace and tranquility during the event.

Dr. Biteko emphasized the summit’s dual role: gaining knowledge on efficient electricity supply and attracting investors and tourists by showcasing Tanzania’s economic potential.

National Energy Compacts and African Partnerships

The summit will facilitate partnerships among African countries to accelerate electricity access. Fourteen African nations, including Tanzania, will sign National Energy Compacts, detailing commitments to improving electricity access with support from the World Bank and AfDB.

“These partnerships aim to build electricity transmission infrastructure that will enable African countries to support each other in achieving universal electricity access,” Dr. Biteko explained.

Tanzania’s energy progress includes connecting over 34,000 villages to electricity out of 64,274, highlighting the country’s commitment to electrification.

Preparations and City Upgrades

Preparations for the summit are 95% complete, including:

  • Registration and minor JNICC renovations
  • Branding and beautification projects, including 400+ streetlights
  • Enhanced security and support for 24-hour business operations
  • Improved roads and airports for seamless transportation

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Mr. Albert Chalamila emphasized the event’s potential to promote trade, business, and cultural tourism.

Mission 300: A Continental Goal

Dubbed “Mission 300,” the summit aligns with Tanzania’s national objectives and Africa’s push for universal electricity access, aiming to connect 300 million Africans by 2030.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership has been instrumental in securing Tanzania as the host, showcasing the country’s strides in energy, infrastructure, and tourism.
